ISO 4014 & ISO 4017 Hex Head Bolts

Complete specifications, dimensions, and application guidance for metric hexagon head fasteners — from M1.6 to M64, Product Grades A & B. The modern ISO successors to DIN 931 and DIN 933.

What Are ISO 4014 and ISO 4017?

International standards specifying the characteristics of metric hexagon head fasteners — the global benchmark for industrial bolting.

Partial Thread

ISO 4014 — Hexagon Head Bolts

Partially threaded with an unthreaded shank. The threaded portion is only at the end of the bolt. Ideal for shear-load applications where the smooth shank carries the load.

Replaces: DIN 931

Full Thread

ISO 4017 — Hexagon Head Screws

Fully threaded along the entire nominal length. Provides maximum thread engagement and clamping force. Best suited for applications requiring full nut engagement.

Replaces: DIN 933

Key Takeaway: Both standards share the same head geometry and coarse metric thread profile. The only structural difference is thread length — ISO 4014 is partial thread, ISO 4017 is full thread. Both are available from stock at Fastener Solution FZ LLC in grades 4.6 through 12.9.

Standard Specifications

Size Range & Product Grades

  • Thread range: M1.6 up to and including M64

  • Product Grade B: For threads over M24 or nominal lengths over 10d or 150 mm (whichever is shorter). Standard tolerances.
  • Thread type: Metric coarse pitch per ISO 261

Mechanical Properties & Materials

  • Carbon Steel: Property classes 4.6, 4.8, 5.6, 5.8, 6.8, 8.8, 9.8, 10.9, 12.9 (per ISO 898-1)
  • Stainless Steel: A2-70, A4-70, A2-80, A4-80 (per ISO 3506-1)
  • Coatings: Zinc plated (blue/white/yellow), hot-dip galvanized, dacromet, geomet, PTFE, and plain (self-colour)
  • Marking: Property class and manufacturer identifier stamped on the bolt head

DIN vs. ISO — Know the Difference

While DIN 931/933 and ISO 4014/4017 are largely interchangeable, there are four nominal sizes where the Width Across Flats (WAF) differs:

Size DIN 931 / DIN 933 WAF ISO 4014 / ISO 4017 WAF
M1017 mm16 mm
M1219 mm18 mm
M1422 mm21 mm
M2232 mm34 mm

For all other sizes, DIN and ISO dimensions are identical. ISO 4017 also extends the size range up to M64, whereas DIN 933 only goes to M52. Fastener Solution stocks both ISO and DIN variants to suit your project requirements.

ISO 4014 / ISO 4017 Key Dimensions

Dimensions in millimetres for common coarse-thread sizes (Product Grade A).

Size Pitch s (WAF) k (Head Ht) e (min) Thread Length b

Note on thread length (ISO 4014 only): For lengths L ≤ 125 mm, use b values above. For 125 < L ≤ 200 mm, add 6 mm. For L > 200 mm, add 19 mm to the base value. ISO 4017 is fully threaded, so thread length equals nominal length L.

When to Use Which Standard?

Choose ISO 4014 When

The bolt will experience shear loads — the unthreaded shank provides a larger cross-sectional area in the shear plane. Ideal for heavy machinery, structural steel, and automotive frames.

Choose ISO 4017 When

You need maximum thread engagement for clamping force. Best for general assembly, machinery frames, and thin materials where full nut engagement is required.

Coastal UAE Projects

For outdoor and marine applications in the UAE, specify hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A153) or A4-316 stainless steel ISO 4014/4017 fasteners to resist saltwater corrosion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ISO 4014 and ISO 4017?
ISO 4014 defines partially threaded hexagon head bolts with an unthreaded shank, while ISO 4017 specifies fully threaded hexagon head screws. Both share the same head geometry and coarse metric thread profile.
Are ISO 4017 and DIN 933 interchangeable?
They are nearly identical, but not fully interchangeable at sizes M10, M12, M14, and M22 due to differences in Width Across Flats (WAF). ISO 4017 also extends to M64, whereas DIN 933 stops at M52.
What does Product Grade A vs. Grade B mean?
Grade A applies to smaller sizes (M1.6–M24) and shorter lengths (≤10d or 150 mm) with tighter tolerances. Grade B applies to larger sizes or longer lengths with standard tolerances.
What property classes are available?
Common steel grades include 4.6, 5.6, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9 per ISO 898-1. Stainless steel grades include A2-70, A4-70, A2-80, and A4-80 per ISO 3506-1.
What is the thread pitch?
ISO 4014 and ISO 4017 use metric coarse pitch threads per ISO 261. For fine pitch variants, refer to ISO 8765 (partial thread) and ISO 8676 (full thread).
